In order to support the Social Forestry programme implementation in East Kalimantan, the Samarinda Environmental and Forestry Education and Training Center (BDLHK Samarinda) together with FORCLIME conducted a training on honey bee farming on 8-10 October 2019 in Kampung Batu Rajang, Berau District. Objective of the training was to improve the skills of farmers in designing and developing honey bee farming. The 30 participants are members of the Forest Farmer Group in Kampung Batu Rajang. From the training, participants gained some knowledge, such as using equipment for bee farming, techniques on honey harvesting, postharvest management, product marketing. At the end of the training, BDLHK Samarinda and FORCLIME handed five boxes containing bee colony (Trigona itama) as a stimulant for honey bee farming.
In conjunction to the bee farming training, a training on agroforestry was also carried out in Batu Rajang village. 30 members of the Forest Farmer Group participated the training. During the training, participants learned about techniques on agroforestry design and development. In addition, participants also gained knowledge about policies related agroforestry development, designing agroforestry plots, and calculating costs for agroforestry development.
The scheme of Social Forestry Programme that is currently carried out in Batu Rajang is Forestry Partnership. The scheme is a form of cooperation between local communities and forest managers, which can be forest concession holders, environmental service holders.
