The Wasur National Park, working in conjunction with FORCLIME, recently conducted a field survey in order to identify the potential and socio-cultural conditions of the community as the basis for selecting target villages for the implementation of programmes relating to sustainable forest management, including the use of non-timber forest products by traditional communities. The survey involved field visits to five villages located in and around the Wasur National Park and was completed last November. In order to discuss the results of the field survey and to determine the target villages, the management of the Wasur National Park (TN Wasur) held a coordination meeting with its various development partners, including FORCLIME, on 7 December in Merauke, Papua.

The selected villages will subsequently become locations in which joint activities of the Wasur National Park and FORCLIME will take place. Moreover, the villages in question are expected to become models regarding the sustainable use of natural resources by traditional communities.

“We are grateful for the programme that has been implemented so far with FORCLIME and hopefully through this support, our community development activities will be more optimally implemented,” explains the Head of the Wasur National Park Office, Mr. Yarman, S.Hut, MP

The minutes from this meeting will be submitted to FORCLIME’s head office and will subsequently be reported to the Planning Bureau at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry as the project executing agency of FORCLIME.

The next step will be to formulate a programme of activities in the supported villages and to determine a suitable assistance model.
