In an effort to support capacity building and the development of conservation partnerships in the KPHK Cycloop – Youtefa area, it will be necessary to determine a number of pilot villages as the target of joint program interventions implemented by FORCLIME and the Center for Conservation and Natural Resources (BBKSDA) Papua. In order to achieve this goal, FORCLIME carried out a survey in order to identify potential villages suitable to receive support in conjunction with KPHK Cycloop – Youtefa managers from 3 - 6 November 2021. Among the villages surveyed were Dosay, Tablasupa, Doyobaru, Maribu, Buper Waena and Bayangkara, all of which are located in the district of Jayapura.

The data and information collected during these field visits related to the location and accessibility of the relevant areas, potential non-timber forest products, environmental services, local community wisdom and traditions relating to forest management, demographics and community institutions, and the presence of Forest Farmers Groups in each village.

Much interesting knowledge relating to local wisdom was discovered during the survey. For example, the people of the village of Tablasupa recognize 15 types of landscapes as a part of their daily lives, specifically: morewai (rivers), sero (mountains), meko (hills), yoo sena (old villages), yoo (villages), burou (springs), dukuru (bays), buman (estuaries), pau (valleys), nau (seas), sensori (lakes), boru (stone beaches), yemo (capes), yepa (sand beaches) and sekere (coral). Moreover, in Tablasupa, people are not allowed to build houses on the sea, beaches or headlands, while all fishing catches must be divided up among the local clans by the Ondoafi (the highest leader in the village).

Based on the results of this identification activity, FORCLIME will consult with BBKSDA Papua. The results of these discussions will then become the basis for the determination of joint pilot villages and the formulation of activities within said villages.
