Forestry work and field activities that are undertaken in rural areas come with high risks attached. Among these risks are the long distances that have to be traveled to the nearest healthcare facilities, making knowledge of basic first aid vital. Teachers at the forestry vocational training school have a special responsibility to their students in this regard, including being able to anticipate possibly fatal accidents.

In order to ensure the safety of these students, FORCLIME facilitated a first-aid training session for teachers from the Makassar Forestry Vocational Training School on 11 - 13 May 2022 at both the Forestry Vocational Training School itself and in the Tabo-Tabo Educational Forest in Makassar. The training session was conducted by the South Sulawesi branch of the Indonesian Red Cross and was attended by 20 teachers.

On the first day, the participants gathered in the school hall, where they received theory-based lectures on basic first-aid knowledge and were also presented with an overview of the various laws and regulations that apply in relation to first aid. Participants were also presented with demonstrations and videos relating to first-aid processes and techniques.

The training session continued on the second day in the Tabo-Tabo Educational Forest, where participants learned a number of practical rescue techniques and were also taught about risk assessments, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the Heimlich Manoeuvre, emergency calls and other important first-aid skills. On the final day of the training session, the participants took a theoretical and practical test and were assessed by the Indonesian Red Cross team.

The results of a training satisfaction questionnaire revealed that the majority of the participants were satisfied with the training, with many saying that the session had been very useful and would support their work, equipping them with the ability to deal with students who experience accidents.
