In collaboration with the Faculty of Forestry from Mulawarman University, FORCLIME organized a workshop on "Accelerating Forest Management Unit (FMU) Development in East and North Kalimantan". The purpose of this workshop was to discuss the progress and challenges related to FMU development in the two provinces and, in addition, to prepare the necessary strategic measures.
Participants of the workshop were representatives from the Model FMUs supported by FORCLIME and from other FMUs in North and East Kalimantan, as well as staff from the Ministry of Forestry, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), the Ministry of Interior, the National Secretariat of FMU, from donor agencies and other relevant government bodies.
The outcome of the workshop was an agreement on 19 strategic measures that are expected to drive the FMU development in East and North Kalimantan, including the enhancement of the roles of universities and particularly forestry faculties in providing professional experts for FMU establishment. This workshop was also seen as an opportunity to discuss the role of RAKI (Rumah Akademisi Kehutanan Indonesia – pool of Indonesian forestry academicians) – a group of experts that are expected to be the "think-tank" for future FMU development in Indonesia.
