Representatives from NGOs, the customary board and thelocal and village governments participated in the “Land Tenure Assesment Tools Training” in Putussibau from 5 - 9 May 2014. This event was initiated by the Working Group Tenure (WGT) and supported by GIZ programmes, Forest Governance Programme and Forests and Climate Change Programme (FORCLIME). The aim of this training was to provide information of methodologies and tools for collecting preliminary information and conflict mapping. Thus, relevant stakeholders can develop and identify potential solutions to accomodate their needs.
There are five villages within the Model Forest Management Unit (FMU) in Kapuas Hulu, namely Pulau Manak, Padua, Setulang, Tanjung Lasa, and Sadap. These villages are sharing their experiences with regard to existing conflicts related to forest area and administration borders of the village. The case studies encouraged the participants to understand how to use the land tenure assesment tools, such as RATA (Rapid And Tenure Assesment), AGATA (Analisis Gaya Bersengketa, analysis based on conflict types), conflict documentation software (HuMA-Win) and gender analysis (as part of social analysis). Additionally, the participants strengthened their understanding of the methodologies for land tenure analysis through field practice in Tanjung Lasa village.
As a follow up of the training, an assesment and a data collection in those villages will be undertaken in July. The activity will be carried out by the WGT and will be supported by the qualified participants as assessors. Furthermore, the WGT team will present the assesment results to the policy makers in the district and on the national level in order to give a clear picture on tenurial issues in the Model FMU Kapuas Hulu.

FORCLIME collaborates with the Center for Watershed Management (BP DAS) of Mahakam Berau and the local NGO Kawal Borneo Community Foundation (KBCF). These three organisations conducted a meeting which aimed to share experiences in facilitating activities related to Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, on 25-26 April 2014. The event was attended by 50 representatives of relevant parties related to forestry in Kalimantan, particularly organizations or institutions that provide assistance to communities in managing their forest areas.
The results of the meeting are as follows: At the provincial level, it is necessary to have the governor's legislation for a technical manual to verify Village Forest Management Rights; while at the district level, it is necessary to build up Forest Village Institutions to improve the organization and the human resources at the site level. Additionally, participants also obtained information on the current status of CBFM schemes – such as village forest and social forest/HKm – in Kalimantan, the methodologies which were used, and the problems in the management of CBFM systems.
To follow up the meeting, a media-based communication system was established which uses SMS service centers and social networks in order to provide updated information on CBFM to interested parties. Additionally, this action will help to channel the communities’ complaints and constraints in the implementation of community forestry and village forests management schemes in Kalimantan.

The Center of Forest Education and Training (CFET), in collaboration with GIZ FORCLIME, conducted a training on proposal writing for fundraising for forestry training institutions. The training took place in Bandung from 21-25 April 2014. The 30 participants are representatives of the Agency for Extension and Forest Human Resource Development (Badan Penyuluhan dan Pengembangan Sumberdaya Manusia Kehutanan - BP2SDM), which includes the CFET, Forestry Training Offices (Balai Diklat Kehutanan), the Centre of Planning and Development of Forest Human Resources (Pusrenbang SDMK) and the Forestry Extension Center (Pusat Penyuluhan Kehutanan). The training aimed to improve the management capacities of forestry training institutions, particularly with regard to raising funds to support the financial sustainability of the institutions.
Topics delivered during the training include: (1) Proposal development with a clear and structured logical framework, (2) Formulation of financial proposals relevant to the proposed logical framework, (3) Organization and institutional aspects (including internal human resources, monitoring and evaluation) that are required to implement the proposed programmes, (4) Identifying potential donors or funding sources, (5) Identifying marketing strategies to promote the proposals.
During the training, the participants developed five draft proposals and will receive further support by the trainers and the working team (coordinated through CFET) to finalise the proposals in order to eventually submit them to relevant potential donors.
