One important step for FORCLIME Program in the Heart of Borneo area is accomplished on 6 December 2010. After a long process, the District Government of Kapuas Hulu, in particular Dinas Pertambangan dan Energi (district service office of mining and energy) has agreed on conducting a multi-stakeholders meeting on “Potency of new renewable energy development in Kapuas Hulu District, the Potency of Micro-Hydro Power Plant (MHPP) in Buffer Zone of National Park”. The meeting will be undertaken at the Dinas Pertambangan dan Energi Office on 19 January 2011.

This step is considered as an important achievement as the local government institution that is not involved in forestry and environmental issues eventually has attention on ‘conservation’ initiatives. Therefore, through the activity, FORCLIME Program is more confident in promoting forest conservation and sustainable forest management in order to reduce deforestation and forests degradation as supported by local government and other stakeholders in Kapuas Hulu District is in place. Additionally, the step is also significant as it develops a ‘new’ foundation for management collaboration between national park offices (Betung Kerihun and Danau Sentarum) with local government of Kapuas Hulu, and people in the surrounding of the national parks as well.

Recently, FORCLIME has conducted a Comprehensive Survey on MHPP potentials and MHPP Strategy Developement within the Conservation Districts of Malinau and Kapuas Hulu. Objective of the study is to develop a strategy for Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHPP) development within the Conservation Districts of Malinau and Kapuas Hulu based on a survey in the corresponding Districts. The result of the study will be presented during the upcoming meeting in January 2011. During the upcoming meeting will also be presented the overview of FORCLIME Program in Kapuas Hulu.

Germany, 4 – 11 December 2010

An expert dialogue on "Gain practical insight into the general and day to day administrative and operational tasks of a Forest Management Unit (FMU) in the office and in the field” will be carried out from 4 to 11 December 2010 in Germany. Participants to join the venue are technical staff from some district forestry services of South Sumatra (Musi Banyuasin and Musi Rawas), West Kalimantan (Kapuas Hulu), West Nusa Tenggara, East Kalimantan (Berau) and Yogyakarta Provinces. Additionally, representatives from the Ministry of Forestry office will also join the programme. The study tour to Hessen-Forst, Germany, is supported by the Forests and Climate Change (FORCLIME) Programme, in close collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.
