With the aim to enhance cooperation on education and training activities, the FORCLIME Team visited the Samarinda Training Center for Environment and Forestry (BDLHK) and the Forestry Vocational School (SMK) in Samarinda on 7-9 June 2017.
At present, the Samarinda BDLHK manages the education forest of Loa Haur, which covers 4,310 hectares and is part of Tahura Bukit Suharto. Loa Haur education forest is located in Kutai Kertanegara District - East Kalimantan, about 45Km from Samarinda. The FORCLIME team observed existing facilities, such as classrooms, dormitories and forestry demonstration plots. After the visit, the team identified challenges encountered in managing the education forests, such as: (1) The socio-economic pressure from the surrounding communities on the forest area is increasing; (2) Demonstration plots have not been properly designed and maintained; (3) Limited number of field officers; (4) Road infrastructure within the area is still limited and in poor condition; (5) Integrated and sustainable planning system are not in place.
Following up to the visit, the FORCLIME Team will review the existing Forest Management Training Plan and provide inputs for improvement.
