By implementing a study tour to Germany from August 27th to September 4th 2018 FORCLIME arranged another expert exchange among Indonesian forestry professionals with German colleagues. Participants were 14 representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Jakarta as well as provincial forest services in North, West and East Kalimantan. Overarching topic of the journey of this year to destinations in northern and eastern Germany was forest landscape rehabilitation covering issues like historical background of re-afforestation in central Europe, tree seed procurement, forest tree nursery management and re-afforestation of critical lands including post mining areas. These issues were touched in order to demonstrate approaches and technical solutions to provide inspiration and to spark discussions on forest landscape rehabilitation matters in Indonesia. Furthermore there was ample opportunity to familiarise oneself with legal frame work and general forest administration setup in Germany and structures and procedures of a Forest Management Unit (FMU) in the German state of Lower Saxony. As a result it turned out that the overall challenges to sustainable forest management in a densely populated country are similar though framework conditions and technical details differ a lot.
