2019 10 16 study tour Arizona jr

A delegation of 13 government and civil society representatives participated in a study tour to Arizona, United States of America during 16 – 25 October, 2019 to increase their understanding of conflict resolution approaches and techniques in the natural resources management (NRM) sector, supported by the GIZ project SASCI (Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains in Indonesia). The participants were from the government of Kapuas Hulu district in West Kalimantan, the government of North Kalimantan Province, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and the NGO ‘Working Group on Tenure’.

The study tour visited various government agencies of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the US Forest Service, and the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution of the University of Arizona and exchanged experiences and knowledge with experienced mediators and conflict resolution facilitators in the field. Various case studies were analyzed to understand the different forms of collaborative initiatives used for multi-stakeholder conflict resolution in the NRM sector, with stakeholders such as representatives of national park management, national forest management, indigenous groups, civil society, businesses and government agencies. The participants analyzed the lessons learned and identified follow-up activities to be implemented in Indonesia at district, province and national level.
