The management of Betung Kerihun and Danau Sentarum National Park and FORCLIME visited the Regent of Kapuas Hulu district on 23 October in Putussibau, West Kalimantan. The meeting aimed to convey GIZ’s support to the Biosphere Reserve of Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum Kapuas Hulu, which was recently selected by the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) UNESCO. The support will be given through programme activities related to ‘Deforestation-Free Supply Chains’ and promoting the branding of the products from the biosphere reserve. “Products produced from sustainable supply chains are harvested or produced by using land intensification methods, instead of opening forest land; the goods are produced in a sustainable manner, their origin can be traced back (traceable) and labour exploitation is prevented’, explained Georg Buchholz, FORCLIME Programme Director.
The Regent of Kapuas Hulu welcomes the support given by GIZ. ‘The new status as Biosphere Reserve encourages us to continuously work on the conservation and protection of Kapuas Hulu district, said the Regent. ‘I hope the programme supported by GIZ will be beneficial for communities in Kapuas Hulu’, he added.
