In an effort to solicit input as regards the identification of locations suitable for pilot villages for the implementation of various activities, FORCLIME held an online coordination meeting with the Wasur Lestari Foundation on September 9, 2021. The Wasur Lestari Foundation has gained considerable experience in the implementation of community empowerment-related activities in and around the Wasur National Park. The Wasur Lestari Foundation is a partner of the Wasur National Park Office and aims to strengthen community empowerment programmes around the national park. Knowledge and experience gained by the Wasur Lestari Foundation, including in relation to the utilization of non-timber forest products (NTFPs), will be used as a reference during the establishment of the pilot villages.

“Facilitating communities in the development of NTFPs is seen as vital and thus the support of all relevant parties, including FORCLIME, is being sought,” said Paschalina Rahwarin, Director of the Wasur Lestari Foundation.

The Wasur National Park is located in Merauke Regency within the southeastern part of Papua Province. This national park comprises a nature conservation area with an extremely high level of biodiversity, including 403 bird species, 74 of which are endemic to Papua and 114 of which are categorized as protected species.

As a part of preparatory efforts aimed at the publication of compiled research on non-timber forest products within the provinces of Papua and West Papua, the Center for Environmental Research and Development (Balitbang LHK) in Manokwari, West Papua and FORCLIME held an online coordination meeting on 3 September 2021. The meeting that was chaired by the Head of the Research and Development Center for Environment and Forestry, Mr. Solichin, and also addressed a plan to produce a pocketbook on the morphology of several types of plants, in addition to the aforementioned publication of collected research on non-timber forest products within the provinces of Papua and West Papua. The book’s themes will be created and presented within the context of Tanah Papua. Moreover, this forthcoming publication is expected to be used as a set of lessons learned in relation to economic development and policy-making aimed at support for sustainable forest management through various approaches, including the Social Forestry scheme in West Papua.

As a follow-up, further discussions will be held in order to finalize the various themes that will feature within the published research and pocketbook.

Following up on the previous coordination meeting of the working group on the evaluation of the National Park of Wasur’s Long-Term Management Plan (RPJP), FORCLIME facilitated a recent workshop in order to evaluate the national park’s current management plan. The workshop was held online on 30 August at the national park’s office in Merauke and was opened by the head of the national park, Mr. Yarman. During the meeting, the results of field monitoring efforts and evaluations of achievement indicators under the programmes implemented by TN Wasur were discussed. In addition, the workshop participants also addressed the importance of developing a new RPJP due to changes in TN Wasur’s management zones, differences in area and the fact that the current RPJP report outline does not refer to the most recent provisions, meaning that adjustments are now required.

As a follow-up, the technical team will prepare a final report on the results of the evaluation of the national park’s RPJP for the 2014 - 2023 period and send a copy to the Head of TN Wasur to be forwarded to the Directorate of Conservation Areas at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

“Support from FORCLIME has been very good and meant that the RPJP evaluation workshop could go ahead. This activity is a priority programme that must be completed in 2021 and is also being prioritised by the Directorate of Conservation Areas at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry,” explained Mr Yarman.
