To enhance international exchange among forestry training institutions FORCLIME arranged a hospitation program with German provincial forest service training centres, started from 13th of August until 2nd of September 2018. Participants were the heads of regional branches of the national Indonesian Center of Environment and Forestry Education and Training and Human Resources Development (Pusat Diklat Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan) in Rumpin, West-Java and Samarinda, East-Kalimantan.
The program was arranged in cooperation with the German Forest Society (Deutscher Forstverein) in the framework of the German Government’s Forest Expert Program accessing the network of German forestry education and training institutions across the country. It covered topics regarding forestry academic education, systematic knowledge transfer in state forest education and training centres as well as practical forest management and on-the-job training in Forest Management Units (FMUs). In order to ensure a direct exchange between professionals visits were made to relevant institutions, where insights into daily work were provided. Among the visited facilities were University of Goettingen, Forest Education and Training Center Weilburg (HessenForst), Forest Education and Training Center Seesen-Muenchehof , FMU Seesen (both Lower Saxony State Forest Enterprise) and Harz National Park (Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt states). The hospitation program was specifically targeted for the principals of Indonesian regional forestry training centres to provide inspirations for design, organisation and implementation of trainings as well as to establish international partnership among training institutions.
Besides the official program several cultural side events were offered providing ample opportunity to get to know some sights in Germany and to experience the German way of life.

With the intention of preparing independent Forest Management Units (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan-KPH), the West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service together with the Kapuas Hulu District Government and FORCLIME conducted a training on Entrepreneurship and Business Development for Forest Management Units on 3 to 7 September in Putussibau, West Kalimantan. The training aims to improve knowledge and skills in identifying business opportunities, analyzing value chains and preparing business plans for selected non-timber forest products. Training participants, 31 people, represented the KPH Kapuas Hulu Utara, KPH Kapuas Hulu Timur, KPH Kapuas Hulu Selatan, the Village Forest Management Board, the Extension staff of the Forestry Service, the Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum National Park and local NGOs.
During the training participants identified non-timber forest products from the KPH area that will be selected as the focus for business activities. As part of the training, participants visited the tengkawang (light red meranti) processing industry and the rubber collection depot. During the visit, participants also conducted interviews with farmers, collectors and traders at each stage of the tengkawang and rubber processing chain. Both are West Kalimantan commodities and have competitive economic value.
After the training, a coaching session will be provided for participants during the preparation of the business plan, additionally, advanced training will be arranged.

By implementing a study tour to Germany from August 27th to September 4th 2018 FORCLIME arranged another expert exchange among Indonesian forestry professionals with German colleagues. Participants were 14 representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Jakarta as well as provincial forest services in North, West and East Kalimantan. Overarching topic of the journey of this year to destinations in northern and eastern Germany was forest landscape rehabilitation covering issues like historical background of re-afforestation in central Europe, tree seed procurement, forest tree nursery management and re-afforestation of critical lands including post mining areas. These issues were touched in order to demonstrate approaches and technical solutions to provide inspiration and to spark discussions on forest landscape rehabilitation matters in Indonesia. Furthermore there was ample opportunity to familiarise oneself with legal frame work and general forest administration setup in Germany and structures and procedures of a Forest Management Unit (FMU) in the German state of Lower Saxony. As a result it turned out that the overall challenges to sustainable forest management in a densely populated country are similar though framework conditions and technical details differ a lot.
