Under the umbrella of the Social Forestry Programme that is currently being implemented in Central Sulawesi, FORCLIME is working with the Provincial Forestry Service, including Forest Management Units (KPH), to develop a mentoring model for Forest Farmers Groups (KTH), Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS) and Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM). This mentoring is being undertaken by KPH staff and is being directed so that KTH/KUPS/UMKM will ultimately be able to develop their businesses sustainably, thus boosting family incomes.

In order to ensure that KPH staff possess adequate competence in assisting and developing KTH/KUPS/UMKM businesses, the Central Sulawesi Provincial Forestry Service, in conjunction with FORCLIME, held a training session titled Training in Basic Business Development from 21 – 24 February 2023 at the Central Sulawesi Provincial Forestry office. The objective of the training was to provide knowledge on business development, as undertaken by forest farmers groups. In this regard, participants were presented with input on: (1) Group management, (2) Development of business ideas, (3) Value chain analysis, (4) Market surveys, (5) Canvas business models, (6) Marketing, (7) Production planning, (8) Distribution of tasks, (9) Business licensing, and (10) Preparation of business plans. The training session was attended by 21 participants who were representing the Forestry Service (one person), as well as 13 KPH staff members (representing 13 KPH in Central Sulawesi) and eight representatives from six Forest Farmer Groups/Social Forestry Business Groups operating in Central Sulawesi Province.

In the wake of this training session, the participants are now set to receive online mentoring from March to April 2023. During this mentoring, the training team will monitor the progress of the participants, as well as the obstacles that they are facing during the preparation of business plans for their assisted groups.

In order to improve eLearning development at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), the Environment and Forestry HR Training Center (EF HR Training Center) held an eLearning training session for all of its regional Training Centers (BPLHK) from 20 - 24 February 2023 at the EF HR Training Center in Bogor, West Java. This training session represented a continuation of the ongoing collaboration with GIZ and with CommonSense, a consulting institution with experience in digital learning capacity building, as well as in the creation of learning content, which was initiated in 2014.

The eLearning training was opened by the Head of the EF HR Training Center, Dr. Kusdamayanti, and was attended by 70 participants from the Environment and Forestry Training Center (BPLHK), which broke down as follows:
1. The Environment and Forestry HR Training Center: 12 people.
2. BPLHK Pematang Siantar (North Sumatra Province): 7 people.
3. BPLHK Pekanbaru (Riau Province): 9 people.
4. BPLHK Samarinda (East Kalimantan Province): 7 people.
5. BPLHK Makassar (South Sulawesi Province): 7 people.
6. BPLHK Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara Province): 5 people.
7. BPLHK Kadipaten (West Java): 14 people.
8. BPLHK Bogor (West Java Province): 8 people.
9. The Center of Counselling of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry: 1 person.

Participants were divided into four classes that were held as parallel sessions, as follows:
1. Class for structural officials, which was followed by 13 people.
2. Class on Online Facilitation and Moderation Skills: 22 people.
3. Class on Learning Technology Development: 18 people.
4. Class on Production Creative Team: 17 people.

The class for structural officials was held over two days and participants drafted a standard operating procedure (SOP) that addressed the implementation of eLearning within the scope of the HR Training and Counselling Agency (BP2SDM) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The experiences of participants from regional training centers were also compiled into an SOP draft and will subsequently be refined by the CommonSense team. The enhanced draft will ultimately be determined for implementation by the Environment and Forestry HR Training Center or BP2SDM.

After the conclusion of this training programme, the Head of the Environment and Forestry HR Training Center will issue a decree on the eLearning Working Group, which will comprise representatives from each BPLHK who participated in this eLearning training. A decision letter that addresses this matter is expected to be issued around April - May 2023.

FORCLIME has been organizing internship programmes for students from universities in Tanah Papua since 2019. In 2022, ten students joined the programme, comprising one from Cenderawasih University, two from Ottow Geissler University Papua, one from Musamus University Merauke and six from the University of Papua. This internship programme was linked to the Ministry of Education’s universities programme – independent study, independent campus (Merdeka Belajar, Kampus Merdeka - MBKM), which follows the reporting system of each university.

After participating in the FORCLIME internship programme for six months, Lasarus Mora and Ledrik Buiney, both students from the University of Ottow Geissler Papua (OUGP), shared their experiences with the Head of the Forestry Study Programme, lecturers and final year students of the university in the OUGP Meeting Room in Jayapura, Papua on 28 February 2023. This hybrid (online and offline) event, was also attended by two FORCLIME managers for the strategic areas of Sustainable Forest Management and Human Capacity Development, as well as by FORCLIME technical staff members based in Papua.

During their presentation, Lasarus and Ledrik explained the various lessons that they had learned during their internship, which encompassed technical activities such as the dissemination of information on customary forests through the application of the principles of Free, Prior Informed Consent (FPIC); forest area planning in relation to the preparation of the Long Term Management Plan (RPHJP) document for Forest Management Units (KPH); Preparation of the Papua Provincial Level Forestry Plan (RKTP); assessments of the effectiveness of area management through the use of the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tools (METT) approach; digital marketing and e-commerce training for the marketing of non-timber forest products; as well as efforts to utilize non-timber forest products that are being undertaken by community groups in supported villages.

“During my internship at FORCLIME, I put into practice what I had learned at the university and also learned a number of new things that I had not learned on campus. I am grateful that through this programme, my capacities and skills have been able to develop and will become my assets in the future when I enter the world of work,” Lasarus said of his internship.

Lasarus' statement was reemphasized by the Head of the Forestry Study Program, Ir. Elisabeth Payung Allo, M.Sc., who explained that through the FORCLIME Internship Programme, students gain the experience to be able to apply the knowledge that they obtain and also learn about other areas that later prove highly useful in increasing student capacities and experiences as they enter the real world of work. "The big change can be seen in the increased levels of self-confidence in students who complete internships," she added.
