In preperation for selecting a suitable mechanism and communication strategy for cocoa business, cacao farmers in Malinau North Kalimantan and the association of agroforestry extension workers (IPAMA), supported by FORCLIME, conducted a virtual meeting on the 17th of April 2020 using MS Teams.
The meeting discussed the readiness of IPAMA to undertake a business project on fermented cocoa, including initial funds required , which it plans to collect from its members or they will invite a local NGO for a joint capital investment. Also discussed was a communication system between cacao farmers, IPAMA and the fermented cocoa buyers.
IPAMA with the support of FORCLIME will prepare a business feasibility analysis, which will be discussed at the next meeting and will also include Greenline, a local NGO in Malinau.
During the covid-19 pandemic, FORCLIME maintains good communication and coordination with its partners through virtual meetings using MS Teams. “Join virtual meeting through MS Teams is not as difficult as I first imagined, it’s quite easy, audio is clear, and the application is good.” said Asriani, one of participants from IPAMA.

Aiming to prepare Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve area to be able to compete and take advantages of current technology, the Industry and Trade Service dan FORCLIME conducted a discussion on 14 March 2020 in Palu, Central Sulawesi. Through the meeting participants shared their experiences as well as established marketing network. In addition to SMEs, which mostly on cocoa and coffee producers, the meeting also attended by representatives from the University of Tadulako as well as Rumah Cokelat, a local government window-shop for cocoa products.
During the meeting, participants agreed to develop a marketplace on the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve (LLBR) website, establish a central outlet for products from the SMEs, promoting LLBR on some exhibitions, preparing promotional materials in public places (such as airport, malls and hotels) as well as creating an attractive packaging for the products.

For the purpose of supporting the implementation of the government programme on social forestry in North Kalimantan, FORCLIME facilitates the Forest Management Unit of Malinau (KPH Malinau) preparing a proposal for forestry partnership, one of the Social Forestry programme schemes. On 12 March 2020, FORCLIME organized a meeting to assist the KPH Malinau and two farmer groups, Bela Saan and Bie Nang Mandiri from Setulang Village, preparing a proposal on forestry partnership. The developed proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry by the KPH Malinau.
