Aiming to strengthen the forest management unit (KPH) to improve forest governance, a guideline is necessary in the function of direction to collaborate and coordinate with other relevant parties in managing the natural resources. Therefore, the Province Environment and Forestry Service, supported by FORCLIME, invited KPH in West Kalimantan (i.e. KPH Kubu Raya and KPH Mempawah), and development partners who have activities in the province to discuss and prepare a roadmap for KPH operations in West Kalimantan on 13 March 2020 in Pontianak. KPH Roadmap is a document that will guide KPHs to implement their planned activities, which also serves as a directive for other relevant stakeholders to improve the quality of forest management.

At the end of the meeting, participants agreed on the outline of KPH roadmap, using the KPH Forum to synergize and harmonize join plans, placing KPH Secretariat at the office of the Environment and Forestry Service.

Aiming to improve the quality of forest management, the West Kalimantan provincial government conducted a focused group discussion to prepare a governor’s regulation on cooperation procedures in forest utilization, which is mandated from the West Kalimantan Regulation (Perda) No. 8/2019. The regulation development aims to strengthen the role of forest management units (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan-KPH) in managing their area. The discussion was carried out on 12 March 2020 in Pontianak. Representatives of the provincial government agencies (Legal Bureau, Financial Agency, Environment and Forestry Service, KPH in West Kalimantan), the Technical Units of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (BPHP, BPDAS), academics, development partners (UNDP and ADB projects) attended the meeting.

The meeting result is a draft of governor’s regulation, which will further be discussed with wider stakeholders.

For the purpose of a wider marketing, nationally or internationally, coffee needs to be certified. Prior to certification process, the coffee seed needs to be registered to the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan). The certification process usually takes more than three years. Therefore, the government of Sigi district, supported by FORCLIME, conducted a workshop for relevant stakeholders. The event, organized by the Karsa Institute, was conducted on 10 March 2020 in Palu Central Sulawesi. The workshop aimed to identify challenges of certification and how to manage them so that the certification process could be accelerated. Around 39 people attended the event represented agencies under the government of Sigi district, as well as other institutions, such as local NGOs, village community groups.

During the workshop, participants discussed roles of relevant stakeholders to support the certification process, as follows:

• The local agriculture technology research agency (Balai Pengkajian Teknologi Pertanian/BPTP) has role in local varieties development in Central Sulawesi,
• The local government plays role in area development and its utilization after the seed released
• The plantation and livestock service of Central Sulawesi supports the preparation for the release of local varieties,
• GIZ will support the development of sustainable local coffee production in the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve.

The registration and release of local coffee varieties will have impact on local seed provision. A better local seed sources will also support the current local government programme, which allocates 25 hectares per village for coffee and cocoa development. The program has been implemented since 2019.

As a follow up of the workshop, participants agreed to complete the local variety characterization document, establish a task force to prepare and be responsible for the release of local coffee varieties in Sigi district as well as having a regular meeting.
