The West Kalimantan REDD+ working group (Pokja REDD+) leads a proposal development to get funding from the Green Climate Fun (GCF). A concept note has been submitted and get reviewed by the GCF. To improve the concept note, the Pokja REDD+ together with FORCLIME conducted a discussion with relevant parties, such as the Province Environment and Forestry Service, the Forestry Faculty of Tanjungpura University, and Bentang Kalimantan, a local NGO, on 7 March 2020 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The revised project concept note, titled To Strengthen the Provincial Mitigation Action to Support National Climate Change Target and a Jurisdictional Approach in REDD+, will be submitted to the National Designated Authority, the Fiscal Policy Agency, at the latest by 16 March 2020.

Aiming to achieve independent forest management unit (KPH Mandiri), the East Kalimantan Forestry Service conducted a focus group discussion on utilizing the rehabilitation fund (Dana Bagi Hasil Dana Reboisasi – DBH DR) on 5 – 7 March 2020 in Balikpapan. As regulated on the Law No. 12/2018 about the state budget 2019, forest management units now can obtain the rehabilitation fund to support their activities. Over 100 persons participated on the event. They represented the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the East Kalimantan government agencies (Bappeda, Regional Financial and Asset Management - BPKAD); Forest Management Units in East Kalimantan; as well as the Forestry Services of West, North and Central Kalimantan.

The event divided into three days, on day one, involving all FMUs discussing the potential commodities and business activities in each FMU that can be supported by the rehabilitation fund. During the second day, the discussion involved the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Ministry of Finance as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs, which focused on how the forest management unit should accelerate the spending of DBH DR through establishing and operating the FMU’s business. On last day, each FMU shared its business plan that will be submitted to get support from the DBH DR fund. Additionally, they agreed on timeline for developing business plan in each FMU.

During the session, the Head of Forestry Service of East Kalimantan Province shared the discussion session to the chat group, which the Minister for Environment and Forestry is one of the members. The Minister, Siti Nurbaya, replied: “It is a good programme, other regions should also have initiatives such as East Kalimantan province”.

Following up the workshop, the FMUs will prepare a proposal of business and activities to get funding support from the rehabilitation fund (DBH-DR).

Aiming to witnessing the progress of the German-Indonesian bilateral programme, Forests and Climate Change Program (FORCLIME), the Deputy Ambassador of the Germany to Indonesia, Mr. Hendrik Barkeling, visited FORCLIME’s implementation sites in Berau district, East Kalimantan on 17 -19 February 2020. He was accompanied by the Development Cooperation Counselor of the German Embassy for Indonesia, Mr. David Tantow, and the Director of GIZ Indonesia, Mr. Martin Hansen.

During the visit to Berau District, Mr. Hendrik Barkeling was welcomed by the Deputy Regent of Berau, Mr. Agus Tamtomo, and some heads of regional government agencies.

As one point in their visit’s agenda, the delegation went to Tepian Buah village to see the waterfall ecotourism village development. This site is jointly managed by the Tepian Buah village community, a private company and the Forest Management Unit (KPH) Berau Barat and an example for an ecotourism site managed under the Partnership scheme of the Social Forestry programme.

FORCLIME supported the community of Tepian Buah Village starting with the preparation and development of the partnership paper until the Minister's Decree was issued (No. SK.8868/MENLHK-PSKL/PKPS/PSL.0/12/2018). The partnership aims to improve the income of the Tepian Buah community by managing the Tembalang waterfall as tourism spot, located inside the forest concession area.
